False False

The Michigan Brewers Guild is celebrating 25 years of promoting and protecting Michigan’s brewing industry. In October of 1997, 30 or so brewing professionals met to discuss what it could look like if instead of competing against each other, they chose to work together to create a rich brewing community that celebrating camaraderie as a key ingredient in great beer. Soon after, the Michigan Brewers Guild was formed. Now, almost 25 years later, we are immensely proud and grateful to have witnessed the remarkable growth and excitement created by our breweries of the Great Beer State. As a member-based trade association, we represent nearly 300 breweries across the state, and we’re thrilled to be celebrating our 25th Anniversary in 2022!

The Great Beer State Documentary

The Great Beer State Documentary draws from more than 60 interviews, across four years, building on the work done to publish the book, A Rising Tide – The Story of the Michigan Brewers Guild, in 2019 and Michigan’s Great Beer State Podcast, which was launched in 2020.

This documentary shares more than the who and where of how Michigan beer is made. It reveals the inspiration that motivated crafty entrepreneurs to take the risk and open their businesses. It shows how important breweries and the people within them have become to communities large and small and shore to shore. It visits the beginning of our scene in the 1980s and continues through the unprecedented times of the pandemic and looks ahead from there.

The film is in production and set to be promoted throughout July as part of Michigan Beer Month, and released July 23rd, adjacent to Summer Beer Festival 2022 in celebration of the Michigan Brewer’s Guild 25th Anniversary.

Viewing Parties

Following the release event in July, the Great Beer State Documentary will be shown at viewing parties held across the state at member breweries, Allied Trade Member locations and community friends of Michigan beer. It is an essential element in the 25th Anniversary campaign which will culminate in a Wrap Party on October 22 following the Detroit Fall Beer Festival. If you are interested in hosting a viewing party, please fill out this form and we will get you added to the list of locations. As we are providing this film to venues at no charge, we ask that viewing parties be open to the public at no cost in celebration of our 25th Anniversary. If you have questions regarding the documentary or viewing parties, please send a message to info@michiganbrewersguild.org

Collaboration Beers/Breweries

To celebrate 25th Anniversary of the MBG and the terroir of Michigan, member breweries were asked to participate by brewing a special beer...which we are calling "Grand Crew Ale." Member breweries are encouraged to use member growers/producers of hops, malt, other Michigan grown ingredients and even Michigan distillery barrels for aging. There is no set style guideline and breweries are welcome to collaborate with their fellow Michigan breweries. The “Grand Crew Ale” beers will be released in July at member brewpubs, tasting rooms, other retail outlets and the Summer Beer Festival in celebration of MI Beer Month.

25th Anniversary Pint Glass

As part of this year’s “Michigan Beer Month” celebration, the Michigan Brewers Guild has announced that a one-of-a-kind commemorative pint glass will be available at member breweries and select retail outlets around the state throughout the summer (while supplies last). This campaign was first launched in 2021, and this year’s commemorative pint glass is sure to be just as popular!
